Part Two: After a hundred miles of sunshine, sugar, and secondhand treasure, I returned home with a full heart and a truck full of inspiration

Continued from part one

A Box of Sweet Things

I got back to town with donuts in my belly, after a peaceful drive. I stopped by mom’s place on my way to the atelier to deliver the rosettes and other baked goods to her.  While we had a quick visit in her driveway, I popped open the back of the truck and showed her what was inside. That’s when I knew I was onto something.

The Moment of Approval

There it was: the bombe trunk table. A grand statement piece. Wide stance. Elegant curves. Leather carved wood, and vintage patina… Mom leaned closer for a better look. “Oh,” she said. “This is something.

That was the moment I realized that this table wasn’t just an interesting find or a piece to be flourished. Even dirty and dusty from being stored away for years, this stunning piece was an eye-catcher. And, it seemed to be mother-approved!

Dopamine and Direction

By the time I got back to the atelier, my brain was practically glowing–flooded with serotonin, dopamine and vitamin D–from the sunshine, caffeine, sugar, and that spark of maternal approval. Truck dusty, heart full, belly happy. Not long after getting home, I must have crashed and took a nap. Not bad for a day’s work.

This is How Joy Begins

The day I drove west, I didn’t just bring home baked goods and a coffee table. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I was moving in the right direction. I found that day to be a validation of my decision to start my new business venture: The Flourishing Atelier.

Here’s to new beginnings and to trusting instincts. Here’s to joy found in a vintage table, with chocolate-covered donuts, wrapped in paper napkins and sunshine.
